KuttyMovies: Tamil HD movies, Tamil dubbed and English movies, from Baasha to Coolie

KuttyMovies began as a site made for the phones most Tamil viewers carried: a narrow white page, sky-blue title bars, and long lists of movies you could scroll with a thumb. The new KuttyMovies keeps that shape, measured from the archived site's own style sheet: the 700-pixel column, the sky-blue bars with white lettering, the list rows with their thin grey dividers and the folders for each year. Every movie now opens on the official services that carry it, through a green Watch now link.

This guide explains how to use KuttyMovies and what you will find on it. The first part covers the page: the title bar and search, the Tamil Movies Updates list, the year folders, the Tamil Dubbed and English sections and the movie pages. The second part tours Tamil cinema from the 1990s to today, then the Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Hollywood hits available in Tamil. The third part is practical: Tamil audio and subtitles, services in India and abroad, free and legal options, phones, the official site and staying safe.

The title bar and search

The page opens with a sky-blue title bar, shaded slightly lighter at the top, with KuttyMovies in bold white letters and Tamil HD Movies in small type beneath. It is the same bar the site always opened with.

Under it, a light grey strip holds a search box with a sky-blue button and, on larger screens, a row of links: Home, Tamil, Tamil Dubbed, English, Top rated, A-Z and My List. The page you are on is filled in sky blue.

On a phone, the links fold into a small white Menu button at the left of the title bar, and the search box stays right at the top where a thumb can reach it.

Tamil Movies Updates

The first list on the page is Tamil Movies Updates, the newest Tamil films in order of release. Each row shows a small poster, the title and year in bold dark type, a short grey description with the runtime, a green Watch now link and, for the newest films, a red New tag.

At the moment the list opens with Blast, Karuppu, Kara and Made in Korea from 2026, followed by 2025 releases such as Dude, Madharaasi, Coolie, Retro, Tourist Family and Good Bad Ugly.

A More Updates.. link in a grey strip at the end opens the full Tamil Movies list.

The year folders

Below the updates, a Tamil Movies bar introduces the folders, each marked with a small gold [+] and followed by the number of films inside: New Tamil Movies, Tamil 2024 Movies, Tamil 2023 Movies, Tamil 2020-2022 Movies, Tamil 2010s Movies, Tamil Classics and Tamil Yearly Collections.

The folders follow the way the site always arranged Tamil films: by year, so you can go straight to the season you remember.

Tamil Yearly Collections opens the year page, where every year has a list of its own.

Tamil Dubbed Movies

The next bar, Tamil Dubbed Movies Updates, lists films from other languages that are available in Tamil, in the same row pattern: title and year, a grey description, a green Watch now link and a red tag where it applies.

At the moment it includes Devara: Part 1, All We Imagine as Light, KILL and Kantara, alongside Hollywood favourites.

A Tamil Dubbed Movies bar follows with folders for South Indian Dubbed, Hindi Dubbed, Hollywood Tamil Dubbed and All Tamil Dubbed Movies.

English Movies

The English Movies Updates bar lists the newest English films on the site, such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey and Toy Story 5, in the same simple rows.

Below it, the English Movies folders lead to Action, Comedy, Thriller and crime, Top rated and the A-Z list.

A Help bar at the very end lists every help page as a folder.

The movie page

Every movie has its own page. At the top, the poster sits beside the English title, the Tamil title in its own script, such as விக்ரம் for Vikram, and a row of tags for HD, the year, the runtime and the genres.

A few lines of story follow, then a sky-blue Watch now button and an Add to My List button. Below, a pale blue panel titled Where to watch explains the viewing options, and a grid of facts lists the original title, the release date, the original language, the country, the runtime and the studio.

The cast follows with photographs, and related movies close the page.

The Watch now link

Tap Watch now on any row or movie page, choose your country in the panel that opens, and tap it again. KuttyMovies passes you to the movie's page on JustWatch, the independent guide that tracks streaming services in every country.

JustWatch lists the subscriptions that include the movie, the stores that rent or sell it and the free services with adverts that show it where you live.

Choose one and the movie opens in that service's app, where the audio menu lets you pick Tamil or the original language.

Choosing your country

India comes first in the country list, followed by the places with the largest Tamil-speaking communities: Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Africa, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

KuttyMovies remembers the country you choose and uses it on every Watch now link.

Change it from the viewing panel at any time, for example when you travel between Chennai and Singapore or Toronto.

Tamil cinema on KuttyMovies

Tamil cinema, often called Kollywood after the Kodambakkam studios in Chennai, is one of India's great film industries, with devoted fans in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and across the world. KuttyMovies puts it first, as it always has.

The Tamil shelf holds around a hundred films, from the 1990s to the newest releases, chosen by audience and score.

The Tamil movies guide picks highlights, and the year folders guide explains how the folders work.

Rajinikanth

Rajinikanth is the most celebrated star of Tamil cinema, and his films draw crowds like no others. Baasha and Padayappa made him a legend in the 1990s, and Chandramukhi and Sivaji: The Boss carried his reign into the 2000s.

Shankar's Enthiran and 2.0 cast him as a scientist and his robot, Pa. Ranjith's Kaala and Karthik Subbaraj's Petta followed, and Darbar made him a Mumbai police commissioner.

Jailer brought him back as a retired jailer protecting his family, and Coolie teamed him with Lokesh Kanagaraj in 2025.

Vijay

Vijay, known to fans as Thalapathy, has led a long run of Tamil hits. Ghilli made him a youth icon, and Thuppakki, Kaththi and Theri made him one of the biggest stars in India.

Mersal, Master, Beast, Varisu and Leo continued the run, and The Greatest of All Time cast him in a double role.

Nanban, a remake of 3 Idiots, Puli, Jilla and Thalaivaa complete a shelf fans return to again and again.

Kamal Haasan

Kamal Haasan is admired for his range and ambition. Indian cast him as a freedom fighter taking on corruption, and Indian 2: Zero Tolerance brought the character back.

Anbe Sivam is a road movie about kindness, Hey Ram a sweeping historical drama, and Vishwaroopam a spy thriller.

Vikram brought him together with Lokesh Kanagaraj for one of the biggest Tamil hits of all time.

Ajith Kumar and Suriya

Ajith Kumar's films are known for their style and speed. Billa, Mankatha, Yennai Arindhaal, Thunivu, Vidaamuyarchi and Good Bad Ugly are favourites with his fans.

Suriya is known for bold choices. Ghajini and Vaaranam Aayiram made his name, Singam and Singam 2 made him an action hero, and Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim won praise across India.

7Aum Arivu, Anjaan, Etharkkum Thunindhavan, Kanguva and Retro show his range.

The new wave

A new generation of directors has transformed Tamil cinema. Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kaithi and Vikram launched a connected universe of films, and his Master, Leo and Coolie became some of the biggest hits of recent years.

Karthik Subbaraj made Jigarthanda, Jigarthanda DoubleX, Petta and Mahaan; Vetrimaaran made Visaranai and Vada Chennai; and Thiagarajan Kumararaja made Super Deluxe.

Younger directors bring fresh energy: Love Today, Dragon and Tourist Family are among the surprise hits of recent years.

Tamil thrillers

Tamil cinema makes some of India's most admired thrillers. Ratsasan follows a policeman tracking a serial killer, Maharaja a barber's search for a stolen dustbin that hides a much darker story, and Maanaadu a man caught in a time loop on the day of a political assassination.

Thani Oruvan pits an honest police officer against a brilliant villain, and Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru follows a manhunt across several states.

Irumbu Thirai looks at digital crime, and Soodhu Kavvum is a darkly funny kidnapping caper.

Tamil love stories

Tamil cinema has told some of India's most beautiful love stories. 96 follows two school sweethearts who meet again after twenty years, and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa follows a young filmmaker's love for his neighbour.

Mani Ratnam's Bombay, O Kadhal Kanmani and Kannathil Muthamittal are classics, and Raja Rani, Love Today and Meesaya Murukku are warm, funny romances.

3, with its famous song Why This Kolaveri Di, became a phenomenon far beyond Tamil Nadu.

Epics and history

Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: Part I and Ponniyin Selvan: Part II adapt Kalki's beloved novel about the Chola kingdom, with a star cast and grand battle scenes.

Aayirathil Oruvan sends explorers in search of a lost Chola prince, and Kanguva moves between the present and a warrior past.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect tells the true story of the space scientist Nambi Narayanan.

Drama and social stories

Tamil cinema often looks hard at society. Visaranai follows labourers caught in a brutal police interrogation, Jai Bhim a lawyer fighting for a tribal family, and Kaaka Muttai two slum boys dreaming of pizza.

Iraivi looks at the women in the lives of three men, Irudhi Suttru follows a boxing coach and his fisherwoman student, and Meiyazhagan is a gentle story of a man returning to his home town.

Gatta Kusthi and Doctor mix comedy with serious themes.

Tamil classics

The Tamil Classics folder gathers films from before 2010. Baasha, Padayappa and Chandramukhi are Rajinikanth at his most beloved, and Indian, Hey Ram and Anbe Sivam show Kamal Haasan's range.

Mani Ratnam's Bombay, Iruvar and Kannathil Muthamittal are among the most admired Indian films of their era, and Shankar's Anniyan and Sivaji: The Boss are grand entertainers.

Ghilli, Ghajini, Billa, Vaaranam Aayiram and Yavarum Nalam complete a shelf full of memories.

The 2010s

The 2010s were a remarkable decade for Tamil cinema. Enthiran set new standards for visual effects, Thuppakki and Kaththi made Vijay a pan-Indian star, and Mankatha and Yennai Arindhaal did the same for Ajith.

Smaller films found huge audiences: Kaaka Muttai, Visaranai, 96 and Ratsasan were word-of-mouth hits.

Kaithi, at the end of the decade, pointed the way to the connected universe of films that followed.

The 2020s

The 2020s have already produced some of the biggest Tamil films ever. Master reopened cinemas after the pandemic, Vikram broke records in 2022, and Jailer and Leo dominated 2023.

Amaran, Maharaja and Meiyazhagan were among the most loved films of 2024, and 2025 brought Coolie, Dragon, Tourist Family, Madharaasi and Retro.

The New Tamil Movies folder always holds the newest releases first.

South Indian films in Tamil

Many of India's biggest films from other southern states reach Tamil audiences with Tamil audio. S. S. Rajamouli's Bāhubali: The Beginning, Bāhubali 2: The Conclusion and RRR were released in Tamil alongside Telugu, and so were Pushpa: The Rise and Devara: Part 1.

From Kannada came K.G.F: Chapter 1, K.G.F: Chapter 2 and Kantara; from Malayalam, Minnal Murali and All We Imagine as Light.

The Tamil dubbed guide explains more.

Hindi films in Tamil

Several Hindi hits are offered in Tamil. Dangal follows a father who trains his daughters as champion wrestlers, Andhadhun a pianist who witnesses a murder, Uri: The Surgical Strike a military operation, and KILL a relentless fight aboard a night train.

These films are popular with Tamil audiences, and the audio menu on most services offers a Tamil track.

The Hindi Dubbed folder holds them all.

Hollywood in Tamil

Hollywood blockbusters have huge Tamil audiences, and most are offered with Tamil audio. Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, The Avengers and Iron Man are favourites.

Interstellar, Inception, Oppenheimer and Dune are loved by fans of big ideas, and Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water by fans of spectacle.

Family films such as Coco, Inside Out and Despicable Me are popular in Tamil with younger viewers.

English movies

The English Movies section is for viewers who prefer the original English audio. It holds the most popular Hollywood films of recent years, from The Dark Knight and Joker to Top Gun: Maverick and Mad Max: Fury Road.

New releases such as Project Hail Mary, The Odyssey and Avatar: Fire and Ash join the updates list as they reach home screens.

English subtitles are available on almost every title.

Tamil audio and subtitles

Language is the reason many people come to KuttyMovies. On most services, a film's soundtrack and its subtitles are chosen separately: open the audio or speech-bubble menu in the player to pick Tamil audio, English subtitles or both.

Big Tamil releases such as Jailer, Leo and Coolie are often offered in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada as well, which makes them easy to share with friends from other states. Films from other languages, such as RRR and K.G.F: Chapter 2, usually include a Tamil track.

The audio and subtitles guide explains more.

Services in India

In India, Sun NXT, Aha Tamil, Prime Video, Netflix, JioHotstar and ZEE5 carry most Tamil films. Big new releases usually reach streaming four to eight weeks after they open in cinemas.

Many mobile and broadband plans in India include a streaming subscription in the price, and several services offer free titles with adverts.

The guide to services compares them, and the Watch now link lists every option for India on one page.

Tamil films abroad

Tamil audiences abroad are large and loyal, from Colombo and Jaffna to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, London, Paris, Toronto and Sydney. Netflix, Prime Video, Sun NXT and Aha carry many Tamil films outside India, with different catalogues in each country.

Choose your country in the viewing panel, and the Watch now link shows exactly what is available where you live.

My List stays in place when you change country, so you can plan a film night before a trip home.

Made for phones

KuttyMovies was always a phone-first site, and it still is. The whole page fits in a single narrow column, the search box sits at the very top, and every list row is tall enough to tap comfortably.

Add KuttyMovies to your home screen from the browser menu for one-tap access. Most streaming apps offer a data saver setting and downloads on Wi-Fi, which helps on mobile data.

The apps and devices guide has more, including watching on a television.

On the television

Tamil blockbusters look their best on a large screen. Choose a film on your phone, then open it in the same service's app on the television, or cast it with Chromecast.

Fire TV Stick, Chromecast with Google TV and most smart televisions have apps for Sun NXT, Prime Video, Netflix, JioHotstar and ZEE5.

Spectacles such as Ponniyin Selvan: Part I, Kanguva and 2.0 reward the biggest screen in the house.

Free and legal Tamil movies

Many Tamil films can be watched free and legally. JioHotstar, MX Player, ZEE5 and YouTube's free films carry Tamil and dubbed films with adverts, and several Tamil production houses publish older films on their official YouTube channels.

Outside India, some free services with adverts carry a selection of Tamil films.

The Watch now link marks free options for your country. The free and legal guide gathers more.

My List

My List keeps the movies you want to watch. Press Add to My List on any movie page, and it joins the My List page, reachable from the menu.

A good habit is to keep separate lists in mind: new Tamil releases to catch, classics to revisit, and dubbed hits to try.

The list lives in your browser and works right away. Export My List saves a small file; Import a saved copy merges it on another device. The My List guide has more.

More ways to find movies

The menu leads to Tamil, Tamil Dubbed and English movies, the Top rated page ranks the hundred highest-rated films, and the A-Z list covers the whole catalogue.

The finding a movie guide explains search and folders, and the how to watch guide walks through each step from a list row to the player.

The collections page gathers every folder in one place.

The official KuttyMovies

KuttyMovies has one fixed address, shown in your browser, and its own writing and movie pages: the narrow column, the sky-blue title bars, the list rows with green Watch now links and the year folders.

Bookmark it or add it to your home screen, and it opens with your country and My List in place. Every Watch now link leads to JustWatch and official services.

The official site and site status guides explain what to check.

Staying safe

KuttyMovies shows posters, stories and links to JustWatch and official services, and every link goes exactly where its label says.

Official services keep your phone safe and support the actors, directors, musicians and technicians of Tamil cinema. Keep your browser and apps updated for security fixes and better playback.

Elsewhere, leave pages that open windows on their own, ask you to install a player or ask for card details to watch something free. The safety guide has a short checklist.

How movies are chosen

KuttyMovies follows the site's original sections. Tamil movies are chosen by audience and score from the 1990s to today; Tamil dubbed movies from the biggest Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Hollywood hits; and English movies from the most watched films of recent years.

KuttyMovies is a movie site, as it always was, so every title is a feature film.

It is a site for a general audience. Films sold on explicit sexual content and adult comedies are left out, so every folder is comfortable to browse with family nearby.

Where the information comes from

Posters, titles, Tamil titles, stories, genres, runtimes, casts and audience scores come from TMDB, the community film database used around the world.

Where to watch comes from JustWatch, updated daily for every country. The help pages and this guide are written for KuttyMovies.

The catalogue is refreshed regularly, so new Tamil releases join the updates list as they reach home screens.

The music of Tamil cinema

Music is at the heart of Tamil cinema, and its composers are stars in their own right. Ilaiyaraaja scored hundreds of films across four decades, and A. R. Rahman's work for Mani Ratnam's Bombay, Iruvar and Kannathil Muthamittal changed Indian film music.

Harris Jayaraj's songs for Vaaranam Aayiram and Ghajini and Yuvan Shankar Raja's for Mankatha and Billa defined the 2000s, and Anirudh Ravichander's music drives Vikram, Jailer, Leo, Master and Coolie.

Many fans hear a film's songs weeks before they see it, and the audio launch is an event of its own.

Directors to follow

Following a director is a good way to explore Tamil cinema. Mani Ratnam made Bombay, Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal, O Kadhal Kanmani and the two Ponniyin Selvan films.

Shankar made Indian, Anniyan, Sivaji: The Boss, Enthiran, I and 2.0; A. R. Murugadoss made Ghajini, Thuppakki, Kaththi and Madharaasi; Gautham Vasudev Menon made Vaaranam Aayiram, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Yennai Arindhaal.

The movie page names each director, and a search on the name gathers their films.

The Lokesh Cinematic Universe

Lokesh Kanagaraj's films share characters and events, and fans call them the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Kaithi follows an ex-prisoner driving a lorry full of poisoned police officers through a night of danger.

Vikram follows a black-ops team hunting a drug syndicate, and brings back characters from Kaithi. Leo follows a café owner whose past catches up with him.

Watching them in order, Kaithi, then Vikram, then Leo, is a rewarding weekend for any fan.

Festival releases

Pongal and Deepavali are the biggest release weekends in Tamil cinema, when the biggest stars open their films and cinemas across Tamil Nadu fill from the first show at dawn.

Many films on KuttyMovies opened on a festival weekend, from Varisu and Thunivu, which both opened for Pongal 2023, to Amaran at Deepavali 2024.

For a festival evening at home, a crowd-pleaser such as Ghilli or Padayappa brings the whole family together.

Family evenings

Many Tamil films suit the whole family. Tourist Family follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family starting a new life in Chennai, and Meiyazhagan is a gentle story of two cousins.

Kaaka Muttai follows two brothers dreaming of pizza, and Nanban is a warm comedy about friendship and learning.

Services add their own age ratings and parental controls, which you can set in each app's profile settings.

Comedy

Tamil comedy is quick, warm and often musical. Love Today turns a phone swap between two lovers into a comedy of secrets, and Doctor follows a doctor who investigates a kidnapping with deadpan calm.

Gatta Kusthi follows a couple whose marriage is tested by the wife's wrestling, Soodhu Kavvum a gang of small-time kidnappers, and Thaanaa Serndha Koottam a group of fake tax officers.

Dude and Dragon are among the recent comedies that became surprise hits.

One story, many versions

Tamil films often travel to other languages, and films from other languages come to Tamil. Nanban remade Hindi's 3 Idiots, and Ghajini was remade in Hindi with Aamir Khan.

Dubbed versions now often open on the same day as the original, which is why RRR and K.G.F: Chapter 2 felt like Tamil hits too.

Comparing two versions of a story is a fascinating way to see how different industries tell the same tale.

Your first visit

If this is your first visit, start with Tamil Movies Updates: the newest films are at the top, and a red New tag marks the latest. Tap a title to read its story, then Watch now to see where it streams.

Next, open a year folder you remember, perhaps Tamil 2010s Movies, and add two or three favourites to My List.

Before long, My List will hold a shelf of films old and new, ready for any evening.

True stories

Several Tamil films are drawn from real events. Amaran tells the story of Major Mukund Varadarajan, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect the space scientist Nambi Narayanan, and Soorarai Pottru is inspired by the founder of Air Deccan.

Jai Bhim is based on a real court case, and Visaranai on a memoir of police custody.

These films often lead viewers to read about the real people and events behind them.

Leading women

Tamil cinema's leading women have shaped many of its best films. Trisha stars opposite Vijay Sethupathi in 96, and Sai Pallavi leads Amaran with a performance that moved audiences across India.

Iraivi follows three women whose lives are shaped by the men around them, and Kannathil Muthamittal a girl searching for her birth mother in Sri Lanka.

These films show the range of stories Tamil cinema tells from women's points of view.

Sri Lankan Tamil stories

Tamil cinema has told several stories rooted in Sri Lanka, home to a large Tamil community. Kannathil Muthamittal is set partly in the island's war years, and Tourist Family follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family building a new life in Chennai.

KuttyMovies lists Sri Lanka second in the country menu, right after India, for the many Tamil viewers there.

Services such as Netflix and Prime Video carry many Tamil films in Sri Lanka.

Tamil action

Tamil action films are famous for their style. Singam and Singam 2 follow a roaring police officer, Thuppakki an army officer on leave hunting sleeper cells, and Kaththi a lookalike who fights for farmers.

Mankatha, Billa and Yennai Arindhaal show Ajith at his coolest, and Madharaasi and Retro are among the newest action hits.

The Action folder gathers them all.

Science fiction

Tamil cinema has taken big swings at science fiction. Enthiran and 2.0 feature a humanoid robot, 7Aum Arivu imagines the genetic memory of a Pallava monk, and Maanaadu traps its hero in a time loop.

Hero follows a man who wants to be a real-life superhero, and Irumbu Thirai looks at the dangers of digital data.

These films are ambitious and entertaining, and best watched on a large screen.

Horror and mystery

Chandramukhi mixes horror with comedy in an old palace, and Yavarum Nalam follows a family haunted through their television.

Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Ratsasan are more grounded thrillers, and Maharaja keeps its secrets until the very end.

Watch these with the lights on, or with someone brave beside you.

Reading the scores

Every movie page shows a TMDB audience score out of ten. Scores above eight mark the films audiences love most, and the list rows mark them with a red Top rated tag.

The number of votes matters as much as the score. A blockbuster rated by thousands of viewers has a settled score, while a new release with a few dozen votes may move as more people watch.

Scores are a helpful guide rather than a final word, and some of the finest Tamil films sit just below the top.

Worth watching again

Many Tamil films reward a second viewing. Super Deluxe weaves four stories together with clues that only make sense later, and Maharaja and Ratsasan are full of hints you notice the second time.

Vikram rewards a rewatch after Kaithi, as the connections between them come into focus.

Keep a small shelf of favourites in My List alongside the films you are yet to discover.

Weeknight viewing

Tamil films are often long, with many running close to three hours, so the runtime shown in every list row helps you plan. Love Today, Kaaka Muttai and Tourist Family are among the shorter, lighter films on the site.

A long film can also be split across two evenings; most services remember exactly where you stopped.

Save the epics, from Ponniyin Selvan: Part I to Kanguva, for the weekend.

Fan culture

Few film cultures are as passionate as Tamil cinema's. First-day, first-show screenings at dawn, giant cut-outs of stars and songs learned by heart are all part of a big release.

At home, that energy carries into watch parties with friends and family, often with the songs on repeat afterwards.

My List makes it easy to line up a star's films for a fan marathon.

Enjoy KuttyMovies

KuttyMovies exists to help you find your next Tamil film, dubbed hit or English movie, and to make each one easy to watch legally, in the language you prefer, wherever you live.

From Tamil Movies Updates to the year folders and the Tamil Dubbed and English sections, every part of the page is there to get you to a great film quickly.

Bookmark KuttyMovies, build your list, and enjoy the film.

Character actors and new stars

Tamil cinema's supporting and character actors are stars in their own right. Vijay Sethupathi moves easily between hero and villain, from 96 and Super Deluxe to Master, Vikram and Maharaja, his fiftieth film.

Dhanush stars in 3, Maari 2 and Jagame Thandhiram, Sivakarthikeyan in Doctor, Maaveeran, Amaran and Madharaasi, and Karthi in Kaithi and Meiyazhagan.

Pradeep Ranganathan, director and star of Love Today and star of Dragon and Dude, is one of the most exciting new names.

Ponniyin Selvan

Mani Ratnam's two-part adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel is one of the grandest projects in Tamil cinema. Ponniyin Selvan: Part I introduces the Chola court, its princes and its plots, and Ponniyin Selvan: Part II brings the story to its conclusion.

The films feature Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Trisha, with music by A. R. Rahman.

Watching both parts across a weekend is the best way to enjoy the story.

Shankar's spectacles

Director Shankar is known for the biggest spectacles in Tamil cinema. Indian and Indian 2: Zero Tolerance follow a vigilante freedom fighter, Anniyan a man with three personalities, and Sivaji: The Boss a returning software engineer fighting corruption.

Enthiran and 2.0 brought world-class visual effects to Tamil cinema, and I followed a bodybuilder's transformation.

These films are made for the largest screen in the house.

Karthik Subbaraj

Karthik Subbaraj brings style and surprise to Tamil cinema. Jigarthanda follows a young filmmaker researching a gangster, and Jigarthanda DoubleX returns to the idea with a western-style epic.

Petta gave Rajinikanth a stylish, retro role, Mahaan follows a father and son on opposite sides of the law, and Jagame Thandhiram sends a Madurai gangster to London.

His films are full of music, humour and sudden turns.

Vetrimaaran

Vetrimaaran is one of Tamil cinema's most admired directors. Visaranai was India's submission to the Oscars, and Vada Chennai is an epic crime saga set among the fishing communities of north Chennai.

His films are grounded, political and powerful, and they reward full attention.

Both sit in the Tamil 2010s folder.

Weekend marathons

Some Tamil stories are made for a weekend. The two Ponniyin Selvan films together run to about five and a half hours, and the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, Kaithi, Vikram and Leo, to about eight.

For a nostalgia marathon, a Rajinikanth weekend of Baasha, Padayappa and Enthiran, or a Vijay weekend of Ghilli, Thuppakki and Master, is hard to beat.

Add the whole marathon to My List before you begin.

Films for children

Several films suit younger viewers. Kaaka Muttai follows two brothers in a Chennai slum, told with humour and heart, and Hollywood's Coco, Inside Out and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish are offered in Tamil.

Minnal Murali, a Malayalam superhero film available in Tamil, is a favourite with children too.

Services' kids' profiles keep younger viewers to the films chosen for them.

A. R. Rahman

A. R. Rahman, the Mozart of Madras, began his film career in Tamil cinema before winning two Oscars. His songs for Bombay, Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal, Sivaji: The Boss, Enthiran and O Kadhal Kanmani are loved across India.

He also scored Ponniyin Selvan: Part I and Ponniyin Selvan: Part II, bringing his career full circle with Mani Ratnam.

A good pair of headphones brings out every layer of his music.

Gautham Vasudev Menon

Gautham Vasudev Menon is known for stylish love stories and cop dramas. Vaaranam Aayiram follows a son's life through his relationship with his father, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is one of Tamil cinema's most beloved romances, and Yennai Arindhaal is a police drama with Ajith.

His films are known for their English dialogue, their music and their gentle pace.

They are ideal for a quiet evening.

More love stories

Love stories remain some of the best-loved Tamil films. Raja Rani follows a newly married couple with painful pasts, Meesaya Murukku a young musician's journey and first love, and 3 a love story that turns into a study of mental health.

O Kadhal Kanmani follows a young couple living together in Mumbai, and 96 two old classmates reuniting for a single night.

Each of these films has songs that became hits.

Police stories

Police stories are a Tamil favourite. Singam and Singam 2 follow Duraisingam's roaring justice, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru a real-life manhunt, and Theri a police officer hiding his past.

Darbar follows a Mumbai commissioner, Jailer a retired jailer, and Thani Oruvan an idealistic officer against a brilliant villain.

These films are full of action and punchlines.

Politics on screen

Several Tamil films take on politics and power. Mersal tackles the medical industry, Kaththi the struggles of farmers, and Indian and Indian 2: Zero Tolerance corruption in public life.

Kaala follows a leader defending a Mumbai slum, and Maanaadu a man trying to stop a political assassination.

These films mix entertainment with strong messages, a hallmark of Tamil cinema.

New directors to watch

A wave of new directors is shaping Tamil cinema's future. Abishan Jeevinth made Tourist Family, a warm family comedy that became a hit in 2025, and Ashwath Marimuthu made Dragon, a campus comedy with a twist.

Nithilan Saminathan made Maharaja, one of the best-reviewed thrillers of 2024, and C. Prem Kumar made 96 and Meiyazhagan.

Following these names is a good way to discover the next generation of Tamil films.

Comedy and warmth

Tamil cinema has always balanced action with comedy. Nanban follows three engineering students and their free-spirited friend, Thaanaa Serndha Koottam a band of fake tax officers in the 1980s, and Doctor a deadpan hero on a rescue mission.

Maaveeran follows a timid cartoonist who hears a mysterious voice, and Gatta Kusthi a husband who discovers his wife is a wrestler.

These films are ideal when the day calls for a laugh.

Sequels and sagas

Tamil cinema has embraced sequels and sagas. Singam continued in Singam 2, Jigarthanda in Jigarthanda DoubleX, and Indian in Indian 2: Zero Tolerance more than twenty-five years later.

Enthiran continued in 2.0, and the Ponniyin Selvan story is told across two films.

The year shown in every list row makes it easy to watch each saga in order.

Hollywood favourites in Tamil

Tamil audiences have made Hollywood's biggest franchises their own. The Avengers films, from The Avengers to Avengers: Endgame, are favourites with Tamil audio, and the Spider-Man films, from Spider-Man: Homecoming to Spider-Man: No Way Home, are close behind.

Christopher Nolan's films, The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar, have a devoted following among Tamil film lovers.

The Hollywood Tamil Dubbed folder gathers them all.

Stories of home and away

Several films speak to Tamils living away from home. Tourist Family follows a family's move from Sri Lanka to Chennai, Meiyazhagan a man's return to his childhood town, and Jagame Thandhiram a gangster sent to London.

These stories resonate with the many Tamil viewers who live in another city or country.

KuttyMovies lists the countries with the largest Tamil communities near the top of its country menu.

The 2000s blockbusters

The 2000s gave Tamil cinema some of its most quoted blockbusters. Ghilli follows a kabaddi player who rescues a young woman from a gangster, Anniyan a man with three personalities, and Chandramukhi a haunted palace full of comedy.

Ghajini follows a man with short-term memory loss hunting his fiancée's killer, Sivaji: The Boss a software engineer turned crusader, and Billa a stylish gangster.

These films filled cinemas for months and are still watched on every festival holiday.

Kaithi in detail

Kaithi takes place over a single night, as a newly released prisoner drives a lorry full of poisoned police officers to hospital while gangsters hunt them.

It keeps songs and romance to a minimum, unusual for a big Tamil film, and its tension and action made it a huge hit.

It became the first chapter of Lokesh Kanagaraj's connected universe.

Coolie

Coolie brought Rajinikanth together with Lokesh Kanagaraj in 2025, with a story of a former port worker drawn back into the world of smuggling.

With music by Anirudh Ravichander and a large ensemble cast, it was one of the most anticipated Tamil films in years.

It sits at the top of the New Tamil Movies folder.

Jailer

Jailer cast Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who seems to live a quiet family life until a gang threatens his son. The film mixes comedy, family drama and explosive action, with cameos from stars of other industries.

Anirudh Ravichander's score and the song Kaavaalaa became huge hits, and the film was one of the biggest Tamil releases of 2023.

It sits in the Tamil 2023 Movies folder beside Leo.

Leo

Leo follows Parthiban, a café owner and animal rescuer in Himachal Pradesh, whose resemblance to a feared gangster brings danger to his door. It reunited Vijay with Lokesh Kanagaraj after Master and became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films ever.

It also connects to Vikram and Kaithi, rewarding fans who follow the whole universe.

Amaran

Amaran tells the true story of Major Mukund Varadarajan, an Indian Army officer, and his wife Indhu, with Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. It moved audiences across India and became one of the biggest Tamil films of 2024.

It sits in the Tamil 2024 Movies folder beside Maharaja and Meiyazhagan.
